Jim Campoli Memorial Trophy

James Anthony "Jim" Campoli came to fencing fame in 1958 winning the National Épée Team Championship in Los Angles with his Michigan counterparts. The following year Jim revived the fencing club at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan coaching it for 10 years and was subsequently nominated to the 1960 Olympic squad. Jim was well versed in all three weapons - at one time holding an A-rating in all three simultaneously.
Few individuals have worked as tirelessly as Coach Jim Campoli to promote the sport of fencing in Central Florida. In fact, by all rights, the division could be called the "Campoli Division"! It wasn't until 1974 that Central Florida received the gift of this esteemed fencer, when he moved to Oldsmar and revived the Dunedin Fencing Club. From then on Jim directed the Central Florida Division adroitly. He started what became the season's largest tournament, the Gasparilla Open, even getting some televised on the local PBS station.
Over the years, Jim Campoli became a legend consistently displaying hard work, dedication, integrity and genuine concern for those around him as he mentored fencers of all ages until his passing in 2018 at the age of 92. The Jim Campoli Trophy is given out every year to a different club in honor of Jim and all that he did for the sport of fencing in Central Florida.
